Four Cubans register for the World Road Cycling Championship

Havana, September 20 (RHC)-- Elite cyclists Arlenis Sierra and Marlies Mejías, U23 rider Alejandro Hernández and junior Yan Luis Arrieta are registered by Cuba for the World Road Championships, to be held in Belgium.

Mejías is registered in the time trial and road race, the latter with the presence of Arlenis Sierra, according to the listings of the International Cycling Union.

Alejandro Hernandez is registered in the road race for cyclists under 23 years old and Yan Luis Arrieta in the time trial and in the road race of the junior category.

The World Road Championships, based in Flanders from September 19-26, will mark a unique week of competition and celebrations, 100 years after the first edition of the event.

The biggest stars and the best emerging talents will chase glory and the distinctive rainbow jersey in 11 events: the individual time trials and road races for the elite and junior women, and elite, U23 and junior men, plus the mixed team time trial relay.

In 2020, at the world championship in Italy, Sierra finished 23rd in the time trial and 39th in the road race.

The 28-year-old, the main Cuban cyclist in the last decade, holds the best performance of a Cuban in the history of the world road cycling championships, with the 12th place in the edition of Yorkshire, England, in 2019.

This year she finished eighth overall and third by points in the Tour de l'Ardèche on September 14, at the head of the A.R. Monex Women's Team, and last August 28 she won the Giro della Toscana in Italy, a title she won for the second consecutive edition.
