Santiago de Cuba, July 26 (RHC) -- 26th of July, a date revered in Cuba as Day of National Rebellion,  was commemorated with a beautiful political and artistic gala in the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba, attended by Cuban President Raul Castro.

Today marks the 62nd anniversary of the assault on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks, conceived and led by the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, who along other young compatriots yearned to see a free and just Cuba.

Veterans, military personnel, housewives, children, in short, the people of Santiago, in representation of the Cuban people came together on Sunday morning to mark this significant event, considered the spark that ignited the fire of the Revolution in Cuba.

This morning, the Cuban people paid homage to those who fell during the attack on the Moncada back in 1953.

Delivering the main remarks at the ceremony, Cuban Vice President, José Ramón Machado Ventura, stressed the eternal glory of the heroes and martyrs of the “26th of July,” as the epic assault is referred to in Cuba.

The solemn act was also attended by Cuban First Vice President Miguel Diaz Canel, Moncada and Granma expedition veterans, provincial authorities and for the first time by the Cuban Five, Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, René González and Fernándo González.

This year, the celebrations for the 26th of July coincided with the festivities in Santiago de Cuba for the 500 years since the founding of the city, a historical territory that gave birth to some of our country’s most noble sons and daughters.
